The Brentano String Quartet is now on (or at least behind) the silver screen ---- and, is one of the main guest artists of Off the Hook Arts winter music festival! Off the Hook Arts presents the 2012 critically acclaimed film “A Late Quartet”, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christopher Walken and Catherine Keener, and directed by Yaron Zilberman, at The Lyric during WinterFest 2020: The Power of Music.
Based on Beethoven’s late quartet, opus 131, the film uses the Brentano’s new recording of this work as the basis of its soundtrack. Their cellist Nina Lee, complete with glamorous hairdo, has a walk-on role (appearing as herself, a role she is perfectly suited for), and best of all gets to hear her name said, several times, by some of her favorite actors!
A New York Times Critics' Pick, Stephen Holden called A Late Quartet a magnificently acted, "deeply felt, musically savvy film". Rolling Stone's Peter Travers called it "a shining gem of a movie" and Roger Ebert said "it does one of the most interesting things any film can do. It shows how skilled professionals work." On Walken's performance, Lou Lumenick of the New York Post said "you won't see a better piece of acting this year than his final speech."
Join composer, artistic director, and close friend of the Brentano String Quartet, Bruce Adolphe, as he hosts and moderates this screening of the film at the Lyric.
